It was the original work uniform of the miners in the late 1800s. Today, it’s one of our favorite ways to wear denim. But there’s still some hesitation on how to wear it — and who can wear it. With so many variations to try, if you think you can’t pull off this look, think again. We asked two denim experts to guide us through a few of their favorite denim-on-denim looks.

“There should definitely be no rules to how we wear denim. That’s just going to limit our options and cramp our style.” - Paul O’Neill, Sr. Designer of Levi’s® Vintage Clothing

This is what most people think about when they hear denim on denim. With this look, it’s all about wearing one tone and owning it. Try black denim as a variation on this classic.

If the Canadian Tuxedo feels like too much, start here. Every guy needs his favorite denim pieces in both blue and black. In addition to endless style combinations, it’s an easy way to get into denim on denim.

“It’s a very simple and casual way to get dressed. You don’t have to think too hard. Jeans, t-shirt, Trucker Jacket and done.” — Jonathan Cheung, SVP, Global Design

For a look that’s a little more street-wear inspired, pile on the layers. When wearing a mix of blue shades, adding texture will help add even more contrast.

A tailored denim jacket is the perfect alternative to a blazer. Try to mix and match fabric weights and constructions. Worn-in, distressed jeans will tone down the crisp freshness of a sharp-fitting denim jacket.
